This past weekend, several F12 Networkers (and one honorary Networker!) had the privilege of participating in the Freeze the House Down charity curling ‘funspiel’ in support of Ronald McDonald House Central Alberta. Wade Bayntun, Devon Gillard, Jonathan Laniel and I represented F12 Networks, with Jonathan’s friend Aimsley Leece rounding out our team. We named our team the Hammer Hackers, and we were what you’d call a ‘beginner’ team – Devon and Wade had never curled before, and my last curling experience was Grade 10 Phys. Ed. (coughcoughtwentyyearsagocough). Jonathan and Aimsley curl together once a week, so as the most experienced member of our team, her help and leadership were definitely appreciated!
Special thanks also goes out to F12 Networker Chris Turnbull. Although he didn’t play for the Hammer Hackers, he donated his time to help run the event and got to participate in some matches with RMHCA’s own team. He even got to play against the Hammer Hackers in our final game of the tournament, and led his team to a glorious win against us!
There were two other special guests at the tournament, Canada’s Olympic gold medal curling champions John Morris and Kaitlyn Lawes. For a donation of $20, any team could call one of them over to make a shot. This came in pretty handy for Stantec’s team when they were playing us… John Morris came in and cleared the house of all of F12’s beautiful blueberries.
The tournament was a LOT of fun, and a big success – thanks to some very generous donors, the Hammer Hackers raised a total of $2245 for RMHCA, and the tournament as a whole raised $20,695 in pledges… and a whopping $192,790 total! For those who don’t know, Ronald McDonald House provides a “home-away-from-home” for the families of seriously ill or injured children who need treatment at a facility away from their home town. By having a place to stay at little or no cost, the family is able to focus on their child’s health without having to worry about the added mental and financial stress of finding a place to stay. If you would like to lend your support to Ronald McDonald House Charities Canada or to any of their individual Houses, you can do so here.
All in all the Hammer Hackers had a great time at the tournament and I know I’ll be back again next year!
