F12.net has delivered technology services and solutions to organizations in Central Alberta for over 20 years. However, it was Wade Bayntun who made F12.net Red Deer a reality. Wade was working at F12’s Edmonton office when he had a dream and made it happen. Here is Wade’s story:
I was working out of F12.net Edmonton, my young family newly expanded by my first son. I may have lived in Edmonton for almost a decade but it wasn’t my home as I always hoped to return to my roots in Central Alberta.
“Edmonton eats friends.” That’s what one of my best friends always said to me whenever we made time to get together, it was always the joke that everyone who moved to Edmonton never returned. At the time I never expected to move back any time soon.
In the summer of 2012 I was going to apply for a different position at F12. When I spoke with my manager he caught me off guard with a counter-proposal. He said, “Have you ever thought about your own location?” I had never seriously thought about it! He, however, was serious and told me that I should build a proposal for opening a location in Red Deer.
This was difficult, mainly because I had never done it before and no one at F12 had ever started up a “greenfield” location. Regardless, I tried not to think about it too much as I researched and designed my proposal. Then, I had to present it, cue the anxiety.
The proposal went well, I remembered my glass of water summoned my skills from the sales engagements of which I have been a part. By the end, I told myself I was proud either way. Luckily, I got the green light and the full support of our CEO.
It took 8 months to find our place in Red Deer. We were already deploying new clients and I was floating between Edmonton and Calgary spending a day or two in Red Deer lease hunting. I was also working to sell the house, celebrating the arrival of my second son and finally I would come home on the weekend. If I had to coach anyone on starting their own Greenfield it would be how to prepare them and their families for the sacrifices they will make.
It was very hard. But, it is very rewarding to see what F12 has become in Red Deer. I’m proud to lead F12’s Red Deer IT Support team and I am back living in Central Alberta, raising my family in the community I love.
