What is data integration?

Devon asks Derek to explain what successful data integration means at [3:47]. Derek talks about how cloud applications often result in a business spanning multiple systems, and how to support that new, widespread process.

Organizations often fall into the trap of “siloed data,” which Derek discusses at [6:25]. A tricky situation is one in which either the employee experience is top notch, or the customer process is smooth and easy—not both. Successful data integration can give you, your employees, and your customers the best of both worlds.

Security within data integration

“Let’s not use the word “cloud” and feel comfortable,” Derek says at [13:35]. Part of successful data integration is constant vulnerability testing throughout. Derek stresses that “you can’t deploy integration and walk away.”

Devon shares how seriously things can go wrong with improper, unsafe data integration. He discusses a story at [14:48] of a telecommunications provider that exposed the personal data of millions of its customers while they were attempting to integrate a new application into their systems.

The importance of integration “patterns” is highlighted by Derek at [17:53]. Depending on the type of data that needs to be integrated, as well as timing and security requirements, there are a range of patterns that can be relied upon—but it’s up to the pros to identify the right one for you.

Data challenges

When it comes to making sure data is synchronized and up-to-date between systems, Devon has questions for Derek at [20:25]. How does Propel ensure data synchronization after integration? Derek shares a real-life example of an organization that suffered 12-hour data delays before Propel stepped in to help.

To stay one step ahead of data integration challenges, Propel Integration Partners market themselves as the Azure Integration experts. At [25:00], Derek explains that they make sure their customers know that Propel isn’t a source-system expert, and they don’t want to be. Rather, they position themselves as invested and trained in a platform that can encompass many sources.

Just like non-plumbers might not have much luck with a recurring burst pipe, it’s okay to seek expert help if you don’t know the secrets to successful data integration! Derek gives his plumbing example at [29:45].
